“On the Outside Looking in ...” – coming to the UNCG Dance Theater March 28-29 – will explore body image among other issues.
GREENSBORO, NC – Last fall, graduate student Kerrie-Jean Hudson received a grant to investigate the effects of different teaching strategies on the health and body image of dance students.
That research has provided her with insights that have changed her own teaching and life as a dancer. It also fuels her autobiographical MFA dance concert – “On the Outside Looking in ...” – at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, in the UNCG Dance Theater.
Tickets – $12 for general admission; $10 for seniors, students and children; and $6 for UNCG students – can be reserved through the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849. The Dance Theater is located on Walker Avenue at Kenilworth Street.
Hudson will revisit two works she created since beginning the MFA program and premier six more. At one point she will be joined on the stage by her 6-year-old daughter Maci, who has changed her life.
The concert opens with an intense male/female duet, performed by undergraduate students Corin Youngblood and Alex Lieberman, which explores a romantic relationship through moments of tenderness and violence. The tone of the concert becomes more upbeat as the evening progresses and issues of power, relationships and external ideals are explored through movement.
The final piece of the evening, “Singing; BodyMindSoul,” is a celebration of self set to the music of Greensboro band Songs of Water.
The Department of Dance is presenting five MFA thesis concerts during the spring semester. Visit www.uncg.edu/dce/calendar.html for more details.
