Violinist, Conductor Sitkovetsky Joins School of Music

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Violinist and conductor Dmitry Sitkovetsky has joined the School of Music as a distinguished visiting artist.


Sitkovetsky will present master classes, give workshops in career development, work with conducting students and coach chamber ensembles.


“I have no doubt that bringing Dmitry to the faculty will have a dramatic impact on the string studios and university orchestra,” said John Deal, dean of the School of Music.


Spring 2009 events include a career talk with students and faculty about preparing for orchestral auditions 4-5 p.m., Wed., Jan. 28, in Room 217, Collins Lecture Hall, School of Music.


As a violinist, Sitkovetsky has performed with a number of the world’s leading orchestras including the Berlin, New York and Los Angeles philharmonic orchestras; Leipzig Gewandhaus; the London Philharmonia; the London Symphony; and the NHK, Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. He has performed at a number of high-profile festivals including Salzburg, Lucerne, Edinburgh, Verbier, Istanbul and Georges Enescu as well as being a founding artist of the IMG Tuscan Sun Festival.


Sitkovetsky has also built a flourishing career as a conductor. He has been principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Ulster Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Russian State Orchestra. He is currently music director of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, and artist-in-residence of the Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y Leon in Spain. As a guest conductor, he has worked with the London and Royal philharmonic orchestras; BBC, the San Francisco, the St. Louis, Seattle and Dallas symphony orchestras; Santa Cecilia; the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris; and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.


Sitkovetsky was born in Azerbaijan but grew up in Moscow where he studied at the Moscow Conservatory and, after his emigration in 1977, at the Juilliard School in New York. He lives in London with his wife, Susan, and their daughter, Julia.
