GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sopranos, mezzos, basses and tenors from around the nation and beyond will vie for honors during the fourth annual Charles A. Lynam Vocal Competition at the School of Music.

The event, which is sponsored by the UNCG Opera Theatre, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25-26.

Close to 200 applications from 32 states, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico were received.

NOTION Music, a Greensboro-based company that makes music creation and performance software, is the event’s corporate sponsor.

The competition honors the teaching and performing career of Professor Charles Lynam, who received a UNCG Alumni Teaching Excellence Award and was named Teacher of the Year in the School of Music. Lynam retired from UNCG in 2006 after 41 years. Many of his students have won vocal competitions at the local, state and national levels and are now professional singers.

The contest has two divisions: Artist Division (ages 24-40) and Young Artist Division (ages 18-23). In the preliminary round, conducted by CD/tape recordings, judges narrowed applicants to 24 semifinalists. Semifinalists will compete on Saturday, Oct. 25. Six finalists in each division will compete in the Oct. 26 finals.

The Artist Division offers $6,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third place. In the Young Artist Division, first- second- and third-place winners will receive $3,000, $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.

Prizes awarded during the finals include an opportunity to perform during the 2009-10 season with the Greensboro Symphony along with admission and scholarship to the Seagle Music Colony. As a result of NOTION Music's sponsorship, a quartet of singers will be chosen for a performance tour of China.

Dmitry Sitkovetsky, music director and conductor of the Greensboro Symphony, Kyle Marrero, artistic director of the Pensacola Opera and Darren Woods, artistic director of the Fort Worth Opera, will be among the judges.

Competition times in the School of Music Recital Hall will be: Saturday, semifinals starting at 11 a.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m., final round and 7:30 p.m. winner’s recital.

Admission is $10 adults for each round and winner’s recital or $25 weekend pass. Student prices are $12 weekend pass, or $5 per round.

For tickets or further information contact the School of Music at (336) 334-4849 or visit the Lynam Competition website at http://opera.uncg.edu. All events are open to the public.
