GREENSBORO — Cyrus Art Production marks its third season in Greensboro with a multimedia dance concert celebrating young people and the change they can inspire, including the premiere of a work based on the city’s historic Woolworth’s sit-in started by four N.C. A&T students.
Performances will be in the UNCG Dance Theater at 8 p.m. Nov. 6-8 and 2 p.m. Nov. 8. Tickets – available from the UNCG Box Office, (336) 334-4849 – cost $15 for general admission, $12 for students and seniors, and $9 for UNCG students.
An array of successful young artists and top-tier professionals from the Triad, New York and Japan will perform, including spoken word artist Josephus III, singer/actress L. Celeste, students at Weaver Academy and, of course, Duane Cyrus. A faculty member in the UNCG Department of Dance, Cyrus founded and directs the company that bears his name.
The concert will include “A Seat in History – Greensboro: Then & Now,” a work funded in part by the Greensboro Bicentennial Commission and inspired by the sit-in that began Feb. 1, 1960.
“Set in the first days of the Woolworth’s sit-in, the work illustrates how the solidarity of community, the media and young students helped to propel Greensboro’s past into the present, and continues to urge social change toward the future,” Cyrus says.
