Lenovo CEO to Address Business Summit Nov. 18

GREENSBORO William J. Amelio, CEO of Lenovo, one of the world’s largest personal computer manufacturers, will be one of two keynote speakers at the third annual UNCG Business Summit, presented by MidCarolina Bank.

He will be joined by UNCG’s new chancellor, Dr. Linda P. Brady. The focus of both speakers will be on the relationship between higher education and the business community.

The event will be held 8-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, in Cone Ballroom of Elliott University Center. Free parking will be provided in UNCG’s Oakland Avenue parking deck, located behind Yum-Yum’s restaurant.

Amelio has served as Lenovo’s president and CEO since 2005, the same year it acquired IBM’s PC division. The company’s executive headquarters are located in Morrisville, just outside the Research Triangle Park. Its North American fulfillment center opened in eastern Guilford County earlier this year. Lenovo has operations hubs in Raleigh, Beijing, Singapore and Paris. It employs more than 23,000 people worldwide.

Amelio joined Lenovo from Dell Inc. where since 2001 he served as senior vice president, Asia-Pacific and Japan, with responsibility for strategy and operations across the region. During his tenure, sales more than doubled in the region and service levels improved significantly, as measured by third-party customer satisfaction metrics. From 2000 until 2001, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer of NCR Corporation’s Retail and Financial Group, one of its two businesses.

From 1997 to 2000, Amelio was with Honeywell International Inc. and its predecessor, AlliedSignal Inc. He was president and CEO of Honeywell’s transportation and power-systems divisions, and head of AlliedSignal’s turbocharging-systems business. Under his guidance, the turbocharging-systems business doubled revenue to more than $1 billion, implemented Six Sigma and SAP, and successfully integrated acquisitions.

From 1979 to 1997, he held a wide range of senior management positions at IBM, including general manager of operations for IBM’s Personal Computing Division. He earned a master’s degree in management from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University.

Brady, formerly the chief academic and operating officer at the University of Oregon, became UNCG’s 10th chancellor Aug. 1, Brady held positions in the areas of arms control and disarmament in the State Department and Defense Department from 1978 to 1985. She served as a senior fellow in international security and arms control at the Carter Center of Emory University and as a distinguished professor of national security at the U.S. Military Academy.

From 1993 to 2001, she led the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech. She joined N.C. State University in 2001 as Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of political science. She became the chief academic and operating officer at the University of Oregon in 2006.
