GREENSBORO, N.C. – Thirteen lectures and concerts will be presented by the Composition, History and Theory (CHT) division of the School of Music.
The series, titled “The CHT Forum: A Lecture and Concert Series: Crossing Boundaries,” begins Thursday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m. with “Cognition in Improvisation,” a lecture presented by ethnomusicologist and neuroscience researcher Aaron Berkowitz of Harvard University. The lecture takes place in Room 221 at the School of Music and is co-sponsored by the Music Research Institute.
“The events in this series involve some aspect of the interdisciplinary, either within music or between music and other disciplines and subjects such as film, computer science or cultural studies,” said Dr. Aaron S. Allen, assistant professor of musicology at UNCG who is coordinating the series.
All events are open to the public. Admission is charged for some events. UNCG students may attend one CHT lecture for recital credit. All events take place at 4 p.m. in Collins Lecture Hall unless otherwise noted.

• Thursday, Oct. 23: “Why Girl Drummers Don’t Lead: Agency and Gender Negotiation in Balinese Children’s Gamelans.” Presented by Sonja Downing, Lawrence University. Room 221, School of Music.
• Wednesday, Oct. 29: “Ideogrammic Relationality and the Entropy of Cigarette Butts: the Music of Ken Ueno.” Lecture by Ken Ueno, University of California, Berkeley. Part of the UNCG New Music Festival.
• Wednesday, Nov. 12: “Computer-Aided Music Analysis and the music21 Platform.” Lecture by Michael Cuthbert, MIT. Co-sponsored by the Department of Computer Science.
• Friday, Dec. 5: “After the Harvest: Carter’s Fifth String Quartet and the Late Late Style.”. Lecture by J. Daniel Jenkins, University of South Carolina.
• Thursday, Jan. 29: “Describing Music, Interpreting Music, Explaining Music.” Lecture by David Huron, Ohio State University. 4 p.m., Room 221, School of Music. Co-sponsored by the Music Research Institute.
• Wednesday, Feb. 18: UNCG Faculty Composers Concert: Music by Rutty, Engebretson, G. Carroll, Burns and more. 7:30 p.m. Recital Hall, School of Music. $10 public, $6 seniors, $4 students, $3 UNCG students.
• Friday, Feb. 20: “Musical Modernism and the Culture of Experiment.” Lecture by Benjamin Steege, State University of New York, Stony Brook. Co-sponsored by the Center for Critical Inquiry.
• Friday, Feb. 27: “Sound, Silents and Shostakovich.” Lecture by Joan Titus, UNCG.
• Thursday, March 26: “Danish Modernity, rytmisk musik and the film Danmark.” Lecture by Leslie Gay, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 4 p.m., Room 221, School of Music.
• Friday, March 27: Performance by the Shanghai Huai Opera. 7:30 p.m. EUC Auditorium. Ticket prices TBA.
• Thursday, April 2: “Early Music and 1968.” Lecture by Kailan Rubinoff, UNCG. 4 p.m., Room 221, School of Music.
• Wednesday, April 22: “The Programs of the Symphonie Fantastique.” Lecture by Thomas Forrest Kelly, Harvard University. Co-sponsored by the University Libraries and the Lloyd International Honors College.
