GREENSBORO, N.C. – How many academics can fit in one life raft?

While this may sound like the beginning of a joke, the answer, just one, is the premise of the raft debate, an annual event sponsored by the Lloyd International Honors College.

This year’s edition of the debate will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, at 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The public is welcome at no charge.

The debate tests which areas of academia?the natural sciences, arts and humanities, or social sciences?can best argue their case for the coveted spot in a life raft built for one.

The debaters will be Dr. Rachel Briley, associate professor in the Department of Theatre; Dr. Nadja Cech, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry; and Dr. Jeff Jones, assistant professor in the Department of History. Dr. Sherrill Hayes, assistant professor of conflict resolution, will be the devil’s advocate.

The raft debate was begun by Dr. Bruce Caldwell, professor emeritus of economics at UNCG.

Debaters are allotted 10 minutes each to state their case and then given five minutes to rebut the arguments of others. At the conclusion of the rebuttals, the devil’s advocate is given 15 minutes to speak. Audience members then vote for the winner.
