GREENSBORO, NC – Biologist and author Dr. James Zull will give a free, public lecture at UNCG from 3:30-5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, on “The Art of Changing the Brain; Enriching Teaching by Exploring the Biology of Learning.” He will speak in Petty Building, Room 136.

Zull is professor of biology and founding director of the University Center for Innovation in Teaching and Education at Case Western Reserve University. After receiving his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he taught and conducted research in biochemistry at CWRU for 25 years, publishing over 100 papers.

He became center’s director in 1994 and began to study the literature on learning and neuroscience, which led to his book “The Art of Changing the Brain.” The book provides an accessible discussion of the biology of learning for teachers at all levels, and is based on stories about students and teachers he has met in his 38 years on the Case faculty.

The event is part of the College of Arts & Sciences Freshman Seminars Program and is sponsored by the Class of 1947 Endowment. The lecture is part of the College's "Talking About Teaching" series that began five years ago to bring authors of notable books on teaching to UNCG. Since then, presentations have been hosted at UNCG by Ken Bain, author of "What the Best College Teachers Do"; Peter Filene, author of "The Joy of Teaching"; Kathy Small, author of "My Freshman Year"; and Rafe Esquith, author of "Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire."
