GREENSBORO, NC – In addition to the competition on the pitch, the third annual Center for Women’s Health and Wellness JV Field Hockey Tournament, Sept. 12-13, will deliver a health education program for athletes, coaches and parents.
Hosted by Greensboro Day School and supported by the UNCG Department of Exercise and Sport Science, the health education component of the tournament will focus on increasing awareness of the “female athlete triad” – a combination of disordered eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis.
The health education program begins Saturday morning with an 8 a.m. breakfast for players and coaches followed by an 8:30 a.m. health education presentation by Heather Colleran, a PhD student in the UNCG Department of Nutrition. Colleran, a collegiate rower and an experienced coach for girls, will share her experiences with the female athlete triad and provide information to help coaches, parents and athletes prevent this problem.
On Friday, Sept. 12, games will be played at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. On Saturday, Sept. 13, games will start at 9:30 a.m., and the championship game will start at 2:30 p.m. In addition to the JV games, varsity teams from Greensboro Day and St. Mary’s School in Raleigh will play at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Admission for all activities will be $3 each day. Concessions, consisting of hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks and more, will be available both days as well. A portion of the tournament proceeds will support scholarships for the Girls Moving Forward program at the Y.W.C.A. of Greater Greensboro and the Girls in Sport Symposium Feb. 20 at UNCG.
