GREENSBORO, N.C. – Fox TV’s “American Idol” is winding down for the season, but American Sign Language Idol is just heating up.
Turn out May 5 to see students in UNCG’s ASL interpreters program strut their stuff as they interpret music from Doris Day to Carrie Underwood. This year’s theme is Love.
ASL Idol, in its fifth year, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Elliott University Center Auditorium. Scheduled performers,
all ASL students, are:
• Mallori Perniciaro, “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls
• Holy Benson, “A Guy is a Guy” by Doris Day
• Anna Simmons, “The More Boys I Meet” by Carrie Underwood
• Yana Isadore, “Popular” from “Wicked”
• Kelly Shockley, “Love Potion Number 9” by The Searchers
• Tracey Tonkins, “You Can't Hurry Love” by Diana Ross
• Jenelle Burke, “I Can Hear the Bells” from “Hairspray”
• Brad Hardin, Barrett Lowe, Chance Sutton, “Greased Lighting” from “Grease.”
Detoine Williams, Greensboro’s answer to Ryan Seacrest, returns as host.
As a special treat, interpreting faculty Sam Parker and Glenda Torres will stand in for John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John to interpret “Summer Nights” from the movie “Grease.”
Admission is $5 for adults; $3 for children 6-12; free for children five and under and the deaf community. Tickets are sold at the door.
Proceeds benefit Camp Dogwood, a camp for the deaf and blind patrons located near Lake Norman. Donations are welcome.
