GREENSBORO, N.C. – Get your green on during Earth Week, April 20-24. The week features activities ranging from a sustainability research fair and a “landfill on the lawn” to the annual clean up of Peabody Park and Buffalo Creek.

All activities are open to the public free of charge. The schedule runs:

  • Through April 30, UNCG Commuter Challenge, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 am-1 pm, Walker Circle. Come learn about alternative transportation options, from bikes to buses. Pledge to use an alternative to driving once within the month and register to win prizes
  • Tuesday, April 21, 5-7 p.m., Sustainability Scholarship Fair, Gatewood Studio Art Building. The campus is invited to this forum which will help faculty and students involved in sustainability become aware of each other's work and discover potential collaborations.
  • Wednesday, April 22, noon-4 p.m., Earth Day 2009 Celebration, Foust Park. Student groups, environmental organizations, artisans and crafters, free food, prizes and more than a few hula hoops will be present. Live music will be provided by WUAG deejays, along with local bands Our Horse Jethro, Eating the Invaders and Holy Ghost Tent Revival.

  • Thursday, April 23:
    • Landfill on the Lawn: 11 a.m.-2 p.m., College Avenue (Stone Building Lawn). Do you know what's in your trash? The Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling staff and some volunteers will be sorting through the contents of a trash bin to find out. They'll separate out what could have been recycled, then display the results for the remainder of the day.
    • Art CAN! 2:30-4 p.m., Weatherspoon Art Museum courtyard. At the Weatherspoon's first canned food sculpture contest, teams will have a limited amount of time to build creative structures entirely out of canned food. At the end of the event, all cans are donated to the Greensboro Food Bank. Contact Ann Grimaldi at (336) 334-5770 for more information.
    • 2nd annual Farmer's Market, 4-6 p.m., Weatherspoon Sculpture Garden, following ArtCAN! Meet local farmers and organic growers from the Piedmont Triad area. Produce and other food items will be available for purchase. Sponsored by the UNCG Sustainability Committee.
    • Sustainable World Film Series: “Wal-Town,” 6:30 p.m., Weatherspoon Art Museum. Six student activists, 36 Canadian towns and one giant corporation comprise a daunting experiment in activism when a group of students, calling themselves Wal-Town, take to the Canadian highway over two summers.
  •
  • Friday, April 24, 1-4 p.m., Peabody Park Protection Project. Celebrate Arbor Day by joining the annual cleanup of Peabody Park and Buffalo Creek. Volunteers will meet at 1 p.m. on the bridge leading to the School of Music. The event will be take place rain or shine, and protective clothing is recommended.
