GREENSBORO, N.C. UNCG ’s Lloyd International Honors College will open its first honors residence hall in the fall of 2010, providing a recently renovated space for honors students to interact, learn and live.

North Spencer Hall will house the honors residential program. A 105-year-old building centrally located on College Avenue, North Spencer will be partially renovated this summer, with new bathrooms, fire alarms and a sprinkler system.

The building has living space for nearly 250 students and will also have a classroom, office space for housing and Honors College staff, and a common room to host honors students’ activities.

“I think it’s an extraordinary opportunity for the Honors College,” said Dr. Jerry Pubantz, director of the college. “It provides a hub for our social and intellectual life during the academic year.”

Students living in the honors residence can expect an environment that challenges and supports their development as scholars and citizens. The residence hall will host honors programming such as the weekly “Food for Thought” lunches with faculty, the Honors Film Series, student recitals and guest lectures. Pubantz said he was especially pleased that the facility will have a new, state-of-the-art seminar room where honors students may take classes from faculty, allowing for collaborative studying and learning.

The Lloyd International Honors College recruits outstanding undergraduate students to UNCG and provides them with enhanced intellectual and social experiences that cultivate globally aware, independent thinkers. There are almost 1,000 students on campus pursuing international honors, disciplinary honors or both.

The college is named in honor of Aubrey P. and Georgia Garrison Lloyd, the parents of Rebecca A. Lloyd, a 1950 graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG). A Greensboro native, Rebecca Lloyd gave her alma mater a $4 million gift in 2006 to endow a fund for the honors college. The university will award Lloyd an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the 2009 spring commencement on Friday, May 15.
