GREENSBORO, N.C. The UNCG Department of Dance presents a concert of student work at 8 p.m. Friday, May 1, and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 2.

The concert – “9 Layers” – will be held in the UNCG Dance Theater and will feature nine dances choreographed by senior BFA students Sammie Abernathy, Amy Blakely, Carlie Fink, Mandy Frazier, Caitlyn Hydeck, Margaret Moncure, Kimberly Reed, Allison Shade and Megan Wilson.

Tickets – $12 general admission, $9 for children and seniors, and $6 for students – are available from the University Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or http://www.uncg.edu/euc/boxoffice/tickets/.

Directions to the Dance Theater and information about upcoming performances can be found online at http://www.uncg.edu/dce/calendar.html.

Sammie Abernathy’s “Unconditionally” is a duet based on the relationship she shares with her sister. This piece includes music by Elizabeth Mitchell and Explosions in the Sky.

Amy Blakely’s “Call My Name” is a six-minute work featuring original music performed live by her father, David Blakely.

Carlie Fink’s “The Looking Glass” is a piece about self-discovery and learning to become self-reliant. It is set to music by Melissa Ferrick.

Mandy Frazier’s “Follow. Reject. Become. Unique.” focuses on how being unique and one's own person is rare in today’s society. We tend to follow others until we find our own ways and pathways in life. This piece represents how we are pulled by society to be one way but eventually find the strength and courage in ourselves to break away to become our own person, to become unique. In turn, our own decisions to stray away from what is seen as “normal” and “acceptable” can influence those around us to also become unique.

Caitlyn Hydeck’s “Imagine what you will...” is a blend of hip hop and contemporary dance that tells a story of mythical creatures (fairies) that discover a magical box.

Margaret Moncure’s “Can you pass the Acid Test?” was inspired by Tom Wolfe’s novel “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.” Accompanied by music from the Grateful Dead, the dancers welcome you to join them on a psychedelic journey through the doors of perception.

Kimberly Reed’s “Life’s threaded ways…” is a piece about life and the journeys we encounter. The thread in which we walk has highs and lows, but in the end the journey traveled is the memories remembered. This piece includes music by Explosions in the Sky and Thomas Newman.

Allison Shade’s “Just for Movement” came about through Allison’s love for performing movement without searching for a meaning. Does every dance have to have a meaning? The music is by Snow Patrol.

Megan Wilson’s “It takes two weeks of searching to find a plane” is a quintet with live music which was composed along with the dance. Elements of improvisation are woven through a larger choreographic structure.
