Lecture April 14 on World Poverty

GREENSBORO, N.C.The Center for Legislative Studies completes its Spring 2009 Lecture Series with a look at the global issue of poverty.


Dr. Anirudh Krishna, associate professor of public policy and political science at Duke University, will begin his lecture at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Weatherspoon Art Museum Auditorium. His presentation is titled “The Myth of the Rising Tide: The Failure to Prevent the Growth of Poverty (Almost) Anywhere in the World.”


The lecture is free and open to the public, and a reception follows in the museum’s atrium. Free parking is available behind the museum.


Before turning to academia, Krishna worked for 13 years with the Indian Administrative Service, where he planned and managed programs for urban and rural development. He has consulted with the World Bank and with the United Nations Development Programme.

His most recent book, “Active Social Capital: Tracing the Roots of Development and Democracy,” was published in 2002 by Columbia University Press, New York, and by Oxford University Press, New Delhi.


The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science, the International Programs Center, the Lloyd International Honors College, and the International and Global Studies Program.
