GREENSBORO, N.C. – A $1 million gift will fund scholarships for education students at UNCG.
The new Muriel C. Kiser Scholarship Fund in Education, one of the largest gifts in the School of Education’s history, was established by the estate of Dr. Glenn A. Kiser. The fund is named for Kiser’s late wife, Muriel, who died in 2007.
Dr. Kiser, who died in May, was a pediatrician, one of the first to address lye poisoning in children. He operated a pediatrics practice in Salisbury and later served as chief of pediatrics and chief of staff at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Muriel Kiser was a graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG) and taught elementary school for 30 years.
“This gift will make a tremendous difference in the lives of many students,” said Dale Schunk, dean of the School of Education. “Especially in these economic times, when many students struggle to pursue an education, this gift will allow us to attract top-quality students and prepare them to improve education in North Carolina and the nation.”
The Kiser gift came as part of UNCG’s Students First Campaign. Students First, which concluded June 30, raised more than $115 million over five years, more than $35 million above the original goal of $78.2 million.
