GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maynard Moose, a puppet with a talent for malapropism, has performed with Willy Claflin since 1977. By the 1980s Maynard had taken on a life of his own, recording his Mother Moose tales for kids.

Maynard and Claflin – a writer, singer and storyteller – perform for kids and adults Monday, Sept. 14, in Elliott University Center. The show, which starts at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.Willy Claflin and Maynard Moose

Claflin, a former teacher and folk musician, began using puppets, songs and stories in the classroom. His performances include ballads of the British Isles and Appalachia, tales of misadventures in the Maine woods, and hilarious observations from Willy and his sidekicks.

Claflin’s albums include “Maynard Moose: Sleeping Beastly and Other Tales,” “The Wolf Under the Bed,” and “The Uglified Ducky.” A book version of “Ducky” was published in 2008.

Claflin, who studied American and French literature at Harvard, has performed around the world, including appearances at the National Storytelling Festival and the International Storytelling Festival. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Jacqueline Darrigrand.

For more about Claflin's performance at UNCG, contact Barry Miller at (336) 256-0112 or barry_miller@uncg.edu.

Parking is available for $1 per hour in the Oakland Avenue Parking Deck.

Claflin’s visit is sponsored by the UNCG University Libraries, Pam and David Sprinkle, Betty and Bill Hicks, and the O. Henry Hotel. They are also sponsoring his performances at the BOOKMARKS festival in Winston-Salem on Saturday, Sept. 12.
