GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Department of Dance’s fall 2009 season kicks off Sept. 3 when accompanist Frank Vulpi performs a free concert of music inspired by Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.”
Other highlights in the coming months will include pieces by faculty members Duane Cyrus and John Gamble, and the 19th year of the North Carolina Dance Festival.
All performances, with the exception of the North Carolina Dance Festival, will be in the UNCG Dance Theater. The theater is in the Health and Human Performance Building at the corner of Walker Avenue and Kenilworth Street.

September
• 8 p.m. Sept. 3. Frank Vulpi Concert. Department music coordinator, lecturer and accompanist Frank Vulpi performs an evening of music influenced by Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.” Free.
• 8 p.m. Sept. 26. Alumni Homecoming Dance Concert. Performers will include E. Gwynn Co., Liz Carlson Waddell, Tracie Foster Chan, Tamara Begley, Erin Brown Craven and Madeleine Reber. $12 general admission, $9 seniors and children, $6 students.
October
• 8 p.m. Oct. 1-2, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 3. Cyrus Art Production Concert. Faculty member Duane Cyrus’ company combines dance, music, drama, video, photography, and graphic art in accessible, intellectually engaging and entertaining cultural events. $15 general admission, $12 seniors and children, $9 students.
• 8 p.m. Oct. 30-31. Dances from 1920s Paris: Two Works by Cocteau. Two works created by French poet, novelist, dramatist, designer, boxing manager, playwright, artist, and filmmaker Jean Cocteau will be performed. $12 general admission, $9 seniors and children, $6 students.
November
• 8 p.m. Nov. 6-7. North Carolina Dance Festival. The festival, started in 1991 and now a state institution, is an annual showcase of North Carolina dancers that travels to five communities. HELD IN AYCOCK AUDITORIUM. $15 general admission, $12 seniors and children, $9 students.
On Friday, Nov. 6, performers will include Eleanor Smith (Raleigh), Cyrus Art Production (Greensboro), Even Exchange Dance Theater (Raleigh), and Kinetic Works Dance (Charlotte) and Helen Simoneau (Winston-Salem).
On Saturday, Nov. 7, the festival will feature Kim Jones (Charlotte), Natalie Marrone (Raleigh), Joan Nicholas-Walker and Courtney Greer (Raleigh), Cindy Mancini (Rocky Mount) and Jan Van Dyke Dance Group.
• 8 p.m. Nov. 19-21. John Gamble Dance Theatre. Faculty member John Gamble has created more than 70 dance works, including many evening-length dance/plays addressing political and social issues, that have been performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. $15 general admission, $12 seniors and children, $9 students.
December
• 8 p.m. Dec. 4, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Dec. 5. Departmental Concert. Faculty and students present an evening of dance. $12 general admission, $9 seniors and children, $6 students.
