GREENSBORO, N.C. Dr. Terri L. Shelton, who is director of the Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships at UNCG, has been named the Carol Jenkins Mattocks Distinguished Professor.

The appointment to the endowed professorship, effective Jan. 1, was announced by UNCG Provost David H. Perrin. Funds were given through the Students First Campaign by Carol and Robert Mattocks of New Bern to create a professorship in an academic discipline related to the well-being of children and families. It carries a five-year appointment.

Shelton is serving as interim vice chancellor for research and economic development, and she holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychology. She received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a minor in child and family studies from Purdue University. She has over 25 years of experience in clinical intervention, community-based treatment outcome research, and teaching and technical assistance focused on children and youth at risk and their families.

Shelton has served as the center’s director since 2001. In that role, she oversees over 30 federal, state, local and foundation grants and contracts that build the capacity of families, service providers, researchers, teachers and communities to ensure the health and well-being of youth, families and communities by engaging partnerships that bridge research, policy and practice.

Her research interests include designing and evaluating family-centered, culturally congruent, coordinated services in community-based settings. She is co-author of the text “Assessing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder” and the monograph “Family-Centered Care for Children Needing Specialized Developmental Services.”

“Every great university has a quality faculty at its heart, and UNCG is no exception. By naming Dr. Shelton to a distinguished professorship, the university honors one of its most distinguished faculty members,” said Perrin. “She has excelled in her scholarship and leads one of our most successful centers – the Center for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships. As our newest distinguished professor, Dr. Shelton is recognized for her academic achievements in research and teaching, and she has earned the admiration and respect of colleagues and students at UNCG. Her contributions to UNCG’s mission have been and will continue to be significant."

The professorship was established in 2007 by Carol and Robert Mattocks of New Bern with a gift to the Students First Campaign. Their intention was to enable UNCG to recruit and reward outstanding professors who exhibit exceptional teaching, research and public service. The gift was matched with funds from the North Carolina Distinguished Professorship Endowment.

Carol Jenkins Mattocks, a 1962 graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG), is widely known for her work in the 1980s as the first district administrator for the Guardian Ad Litem program for Craven, Carteret and Pamlico, a post she held for 12 years. The Guardian Ad Litem program provides abused children with a voice in the court system. In 2006, she received UNCG’s Adelaide F. Holderness/H. Michael Weaver Award for her distinguished service to the state.

Robert “Bob” Mattocks is a 1959 graduate of N.C. State University. His career includes positions as partner and president of Jenkins Gas and chairman and CEO of Jenkins – The Energy Company in Pollocksville. He served on the N.C. Board of Transportation for eight years and is past president of the National Propane Gas Association. He has served on the Wachovia Bank Regional Board and the Board of Trustees for NCSU.

The Students First Campaign, completed on June 30, 2009, raised $115,346,891 and exceeded the $100 million goal by 15.3 percent, through gifts and pledges from approximately 22,000 donors.
