GREENSBORO, N.C. – WARNING: The N.C. Theatre for Young People’s (NCTYP) production of “Go, Dog. Go!” may cause involuntary tail wagging in children and adults.
“Go, Dog. Go!” – based on the book by P.D. Eastman – tours schools through April. Four public performances are scheduled March 27-29 in Taylor Theatre.
Catch it. If you can.
“The whole show moves,” says NCTYP Director Rachel Briley. “Every set piece is on wheels. That’s the effect we’re going for, the illusion of motion.”
NCTYP is based at UNCG, and the university’s theatre students perform, direct and manage the show. Actors will make use of roller skates, pogo sticks, scooters and wheeled chairs while wearing stiff cardboard “scarves” to suggest motion.
Metal ladders become trees. A trombone player and a bassist provide live music.
And, Briley says, there’s lot of audience interaction to keep kids engaged. “It’s closer to the European style of youth theatre where there’s more bold interaction with the audience. American kids’ theater tends to be more restrained and polite.”
The show matches the mood and pace of a child at play, Briley says. “Children are so invested in the world of make-believe. There are some large, incredibly expansive moments. It’s like a big dog party.”
All public performances take place in Taylor Theatre on Tate Street. Dates and times are: Friday, March 27, 8 p.m. (get in free with a donated can of food or nonperishable
food item); Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29, 2 p.m.
Tickets are $12 adults; $10 students and senior citizens; $8 groups of 10 or more and UNCG Alumni Association members; and $7 current UNCG students.
