GREENSBORO, NC – The 11th Annual Shades of Color Conference, sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, focuses on the very timely issue of financial literacy in communities of color.
The conference runs 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, March 28, in Elliott University Center. The conversation throughout the conference will address how people of color, and all people of lesser means, can reverse trends and begin to accumulate wealth – especially in the shadow of our current bleak economy.
Meizhu Lui, co-author of “The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the U.S. Racial Wealth Divide” and former executive director of United for a Fair Economy, is the keynote speaker. Lui’s book details the decisive influence of government on Americans’ net worth. Liu will share her perspective on why many people of color lack assets.
Other topics will include setting and managing a budget, understanding credit and credit scoring, and investing for the future. Guests will include representatives from the N.C. State Employees’ Credit Union, the North Carolina Institute for Minority Economic Development and independent credit counselors.
Shades of Color is free for UNCG students, faculty and staff. The public is welcome at a conference rate of $15 per person. Lunch is provided at no additional cost.
Registration is required by Friday, March 20. Register online at https://studentaffairs.uncg.edu/forms/index.php?id=320.
A detailed conference agenda will be available at http://maf.dept.uncg.edu/SOCC/ after Feb.18.
