GREENSBORO, NC – UNCG will host a conference Friday, March 6, for counselors, psychologists and social workers who want to expand their understanding of working with clients from other races and cultures.
The conference, “Developing and Enhancing Transcultural Skills,” runs from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. in Cone Ballroom, Elliott University Center. Cost is $70 per person.

Dr. Jose Villalba, assistant professor of Counseling and Educational Development, will lead the morning session from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Villalba will focus on the essential role that self-awareness plays in working with an increasingly culturally diverse clientele.
Villalba is a licensed K-12 school counselor in North Carolina and a Nationally Certified Counselor. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development and is associate editor of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work.
Dr. Johnnie McFadden, director of the African American Professors Program at the University of South Carolina, and Dr. Marty Jencius, associate professor in the Adult, Counseling, Health and Vocational Education program at Kent State University, will lead the afternoon session from 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. McFadden and Jencius will focus on stylistic counseling, a new model designed to give counselors a systematic perspective on working effectively across cultures.
McFadden has written several books, including “Transcultural Vignettes for Helping and Management Professionals,” “Challenges of Cultural and Racial Diversity to Counseling” and “Transcultural Counseling.” Jencius co-authored “Groups: Planning and Leadership Skills,” and edits the monthly Digital Psyway column in Counseling Today magazine.
UNCG will provide a free exit pass for the Oakland Avenue parking deck.
Lunch is not provided, but on-site dining is available.
The conference is sponsored by the UNCG Counseling and Testing Center, and the counseling, social work and psychology departments. Co-sponsors are the Moses Cone/Wesley Long Community Health Foundation and the Greensboro Area Health Education Center.
