GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dr. Linda Buettner, a professor in the Department of Recreation, Tourism, and Hospitality Management, has received a $7,500 grant from The Brookdale Foundation Group to help those with early stage memory loss.

The grant supports the creation of the ARROW Club, an innovative program that will provide therapeutic and educational activities 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Fridays at the North Campus of Gateway University Research Park, 5900 Summit Ave. in Browns Summit.

The ARROW (Active Recreational Resources for Optimal Wellness) Club is now screening participants with early stage memory loss. Screening and the first session are free; each additional session costs $20. For more information, contact program coordinator Suzanne Fitzsimmons, RN, at (336) 554-5584 or s_fitzsi@uncg.edu.

The program is designed to serve those with mild memory loss, which could be caused by Parkinson’s, brain injury, early stage Alzheimer’s or a mild cognitive impairment. Participants will learn techniques to help cope with memory loss and will practice mental and physical exercises that can help delay related symptoms and problems.

“We look forward to welcoming people experiencing memory loss to participate in this therapeutic, social and educational program,” said Buettner. “Our model is based on research showing the importance of active recreation, cognitive stimulation, physical exercise and coping skills training.”

Recreational therapy faculty and students in UNCG’s School of Health and Human Performance, as well as local public and non-profit agencies, are helping start the program and will continue to play a central role, Buettner said.

In announcing the award, Stephen L. Schwartz, president of The Brookdale Foundation, stated, “We at The Foundation appreciate how important it is for people with early memory loss to remain active members of the community and to participate in programs that optimize functioning and independence.

“The Brookdale model utilizes health faculty, professionals and trained students to offer those with early memory loss opportunities to learn techniques and skills that enhance memory and increase well being and to enjoy camaraderie.”

The Brookdale Foundation Group of New York City has supported the creation of programs dedicated to improving the lives of older adults in more than 200 communities in 34 states.
