‘Civil Liberties & Surveillance’ Honors Lecture Feb. 13

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Roger Newman, the author of “Banned Films: Movies, Censors and the First Amendment,” will deliver the keynote address for the 2009 Honors Symposium sponsored by the Lloyd International Honors College.

Newman, an adjunct professor at Columbia University, will speak on “Civil Liberties and Surveillance” at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the Maple Room of Elliott University Center. The public is welcome at no charge.

Newman has taught “Journalism, the Law and Society” at Columbia since 2003, and is the editor-in-chief of “The Constitution and Its Amendments” and editor of the Yale Biographical Dictionary of American Law.

Outstanding UNCG undergraduates will also give 10-minute presentations on research as part of the Honors Symposium. Papers cover subjects including literature, public policy, music, religious studies, art, education, popular culture, retail studies and mathematics.

The presentations will be held at 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the Maple Room and other nearby rooms on the second floor of Elliott University Center. The presentations, which are free and open to the public, will be followed by commentary and questions from faculty members.
