GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2009 performances of “The Vagina Monologues” at UNCG will shine a light on the plight of women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The play, a series of monologues written by Eve Ensler, will be performed by UNCG students, faculty and staff at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb.13-14, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14. All performances will take place in the Elliott University Center auditorium.
This year’s “The Vagina Monologues,” a play that explores female sexuality from a variety of perspectives, will include pieces drawing attention to sexual violence against women and girls in the Congo. Violent acts – including rape, kidnapping, forced prostitution and sexual slavery – have been used as a weapon of war in the country’s longstanding conflict.
UNCG’s showings will also benefit victims of abuse in Greensboro. While admission is free, a donation of $5 is suggested with proceeds going to the Clara House, a local battered women’s shelter. The Women’s and Gender Studies Program, the sponsor of the play, has raised about $7,000 for Clara House over the past three years. The program’s annual production of the play also supports V-Day, an international movement to end violence against women and girls.
