Music Lecture Series Spring 2009 Events

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Composition, Theory and History Division lecture series in the UNCG School of Music will resume Thursday, Jan. 29, with a lecture by Dr. David Huron titled “Describing Music, Interpreting Music, Explaining Music.”

Huron, a professor in the School of Music at The Ohio State University, will speak at 4 p.m. in School of Music, Room 221. His lecture, which is open to the public, explores the different structures in music and various studies that provide insight into what the music is communicating. The event is cosponsored by the Music Research Institute.

Other lectures and events for the spring semester, all of which are free and open to the public unless noted, include:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 18: UNCG Faculty Composers Concert featuring music by Alejandro Rutty, Mark Engebretson, Gregory Carroll, Michael Burns and more. 7:30 p.m. School of Music Recital Hall. $10 general admission, $6 seniors, $4 students and $3 UNCG students.   • Friday, Feb. 20: “Musical Modernism and the Culture of Experiment.” Lecture by Benjamin Steege, State University of New York at Stony Brook. 4 p.m. School of Music, Room 217. Co-sponsored with the Center for Critical Inquiry.
  • Friday, Feb. 27: “Sound, Silents and Shostakovich.” Lecture by Joan Titus, UNCG. 4 p.m. School of Music, Room 217.
  • Thursday, March 26: “Danish Modernity, rytmisk musik, and the Film 'Danmark.'” Lecture by Leslie Gay, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. 4 p.m. School of Music, Room 221.
  • Friday, March 27: Shanghai Huai Opera. 7:30 p.m. Elliott University Center Auditorium. $12 general admission, $8 seniors, $6 child/student and $5 UNCG students. Tickets are available through the UNCG Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or http://boxoffice.uncg.edu.
  • Thursday, April 2: “Early Music and 1968.” Lecture by Kailan Rubinoff, UNCG. 4 p.m. School of Music, Room 221.
  • Wednesday, April 22: “The Programs of the Symphonie Fantastique.” Lecture by Thomas Forrest Kelly, Harvard University. 4 p.m. School of Music, Room 217. Co-sponsored by the University Libraries and the Lloyd International Honors College.
