Wassel Named National Gerontology Association Fellow

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dr. Jan Wassel, director of the Gerontology Program, has been selected as a fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. She is one of five people to receive the lifetime designation this year.

Wassel, who also serves as co-director of UNCG’s dual master’s degree in gerontology and business administration and an assistant professor of sociology, has been at UNCG since 2001. Prior to coming to Greensboro, Wassel was an assistant professor in the division of social science and education at Pennsylvania State University-Delaware County. She is also a registered financial gerontologist and a faculty member and associate dean with the American Institute of Financial Gerontology.

Wassel earned a dual PhD in sociology and demography with a minor in gerontology from The Pennsylvania State University in 1994.

The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education fellows are chosen from individuals with established careers in gerontology and geriatrics education who have exhibited a record of excellence beyond routine teaching. The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education has more than 280 institutional members that offer education, training and research in the field of aging.
