GREENSBORO, N.C. — More than 1,700 young musicians from around the country will flock to The University of North Carolina at Greensboro July 12-24 for the annual UNCG Summer Music Camp.
Now in its 27th year, the camp is known for being the largest and most popular music camp on a college or university campus in America, said Dr. John Locke, the camp’s founder and the UNCG Director of Bands.
The campers will give a series of concerts to wrap up their summer camp experience and showcase what they learned. The band, choral, piano and orchestra concerts all start at 6:15 p.m. on Fridays, July 17 and 24, in various locations on campus. The public is welcome to attend at no charge. For a full schedule and room locations, see the 2009 Summer Music Camp Handbook at www.smcamp.org.
Despite the sluggish economy, enrollment has been strong this year, Locke said. While the number of total applications has dipped, the camp still has students on waiting lists for many instruments.
"The Music Camp at UNCG offers music students from across North Carolina and around the United States a chance to experience a high level of music making and to grow as musicians,” Locke said. “People tell us that our camp is a prime factor in providing the motivation needed for students wanting to excel in their musical development. We also hope that our student campers have lots of fun while they are with us and that they meet other motivated musicians and make some new friends."
More than 40,000 campers have attended UNCG Summer Music Camp since the event was founded in 1983. This year, students are attending from as far away as Germany.
