GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG is providing more than $798,350 in merit scholarships, including awards to 29 new freshmen, for the 2009-10 academic year through the university’s Merit Scholarship program.
The Merit Awards Program recognizes and encourages exceptional academic ability and talent. All of the awards are renewable for three additional years of study. New scholarships are being created through the UNCG Students First Campaign, which exceeded its $100 million goal and has raised more than $111 million so far.
This year’s merit scholars are:
Butler Scholarship
The Butler Centennial Scholarship is valued annually at $10,800 for in-state students, for a total value of $43,200 over four years. The Butler Fund was created by the late Ethel Virginia Butler, who managed the UNCG Bookstore from 1945 until her retirement in 1974.
This year’s recipients are:
• Katherine A. Elliott, 2322 Metts Ave., and Christopher D. Nicholas, 4638 Lord Elkins Road, both of Wilmington.
• Naomi R. Bate, 4547 Peeples Road, Oak Ridge.
• Anna M. Darnell, 105 Big Oak Drive, Macon, Ga.
Fisher Scholarship
The Marion White Fisher Scholarship is valued at $6,000 per year for a total of $24,000. The awards were made possible by a bequest of Freida White McGirt in memory of her daughter, Dr. Marion White Fisher, Class of 1939.
This year’s recipient is:
• Matthew K. Moss, 2149 Troendly St., Burlington.
Board of Visitors Chancellor’s Scholarship
The Board of Visitors Chancellor’s Scholarship is valued at $6,000 with a total value of $24,000.
This year’s recipient is:
• Abigail F. Smith, 1020 37th Ave. NE, Hickory.
Sloan Scholarship
The Harry B. and Edith V. Sloan Memorial Scholarship is valued at $2,500, with a total value of $10,000. The award was endowed in 1997 for students interested in pursuing study in health, the sciences or the mathematical sciences. It was created through a bequest from the late Edith V. Sloan of Greensboro, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematical Sciences from 1966-83 and an alumna of UNCG. The scholarship also bears the name of her late husband, Harry B. Sloan.
This year’s recipient is:
• Leslie L. Dooley, 140 Bran Court, Lexington, SC.
Reynolds Scholarship
Katharine Smith Reynolds Scholarships are valued at $8,000, for a total value of $32,000. Reynolds Scholarships have been awarded at UNCG since 1963.
This year’s recipients are:
• Benjamin R. Windsor, 300 Dolley Madison Road, Greensboro.
• Lottie A. Hensley, 866 Canaan Church Road, Denton.
• Olivia M. Kirby, 1310 Kensington Drive, High Point.
• Kelley A. Fore, 271 Hawk Road, Sanford.
• Caitlin M. Gault, 1012 E. Maple Ave., Gastonia.
• Nathan R. Myers, 1520 10th Street Drive NW, Hickory.
Jefferson-Pilot Scholarship
The Jefferson-Pilot Scholarships are valued at $5,000 per year, for a total value of $20,000. The Jefferson-Pilot Scholarship Program was established in 1983 by the former Jefferson-Pilot Corporation, which is now Lincoln Financial Inc.
This year’s recipient is:
• David S. Miller, 6211 Moores Creek Drive, Summerfield.
Alumni Award
The Alumni Award is valued at $4,000 per year for a total value of $16,000. The scholarships are funded by contributions from alumni and friends of the institution through the University's Annual Program.
This year’s recipients are:
• Wilson C. Brooks, 6124 Rosebriar Lane, Charlotte.
• Jack F. Woolard, 1504 Northfield Street, Greensboro.
• Jacob R. Phillips, 660 Tyson Creek Church Road, Bear Creek.
• Alexandra M. Danna, 2770 Victoria Lake Drive, Mount Pleasant, SC.
Bryan Scholarship
The Kathleen Price and Joseph M. Bryan Scholarships are valued at $6,000 per year, with a total value of $24,000. The scholarships were created in 1983 by the Greensboro couple when they established the Bryan Endowment Fund to provide assistance for undergraduate and graduate students in the School of Business and Economics. In 1987, the UNCG Board of Trustees named the school in his honor.
Recipients this year are:
• Diana C. Phelps, 5220 Troutman Lane, Raleigh.
• Kerry S. Radigan, 1495 W. Connecticut Ave., Southern Pines.
• Matthew W. Younts, 7837 Athens Road, Stokesdale.
• Cody C. McCollem, 3362 Flat Shoals Road, Germantown.
Class of 1970 Scholarship
The Class of 1970 Scholarship is valued at $3,000 per year, for a total value of $12,000. It is made possible through gifts from the Class of 1970.
This year’s recipient is:
• Emily C. Ritter, 1258 Gould Road, Jacksonville.
Donoho Scholarship
The May Mebane Donoho Scholarship is valued at $3,000, for a total value of $12,000. The Donoho fund was established through a bequest from the estate of May M. Donoho, class of 1930. She majored in history at the North Carolina College for Women (now UNCG) and later taught history and French in high schools in the state, then spent 20 years with the N.C. Employment Security Commission.
This year’s recipient is:
• Laura R. Blankenship, 1204 Century Park Ave., Kernersville.
Preyer Scholarship
The L. Richardson and Emily Harris Preyer Scholarship is valued at $3,000, for a total value of $12,000. Established in 1991, the Preyer Scholarships are named for the late Greensboro couple who were known for their extensive public service. A former Superior Court Judge and federal court judge, Preyer represented North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 12 years. Emily Preyer was a 1939 graduate of Woman’s College (now UNCG) who was involved in educational and civic affairs for many years.
This year’s recipient is:
• Evan M. Frierson, 904 Fairmont Street, Greensboro.
Carter/Phillips Scholarship
The Barbara C. Carter and Hal B. Phillips, Jr. Scholarship is valued at $5,000 per year for a total value of $20,000. It is awarded to entering freshmen majoring in mathematics (or related fields), the physical and biological sciences, or other science related majors offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
This year’s recipient is:
• Thomas C. Moman, P.O. Box 632, Rosman.
50th Class Reunion Scholarship
The 50th Class Reunion Scholarship is valued at $5,000 per year for a total value of $20,000. It is made possible through on-going class gifts given by alumni on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their graduation from the university.
This year’s recipient is:
• Michael B. Wells, 404 Rogers Court, Belmont.
Levin Scholarship
The Becky Ruhmann Levin Scholarship is valued at $6,000 per year for a total value of $24,000. It is made possible by a gift from Levin, founder, chairman and CEO of Levin & Company, Inc., an international executive search firm focusing on biotechnology and the life sciences. She is a 1979 business graduate of UNCG.
This year’s recipients are:
• Samantha M. Belletete, 1354 Capriole Lane, Matthews.
• Steven J. Coats, 3305 Mandalay Street, Fayetteville.
