GREENSBORO, NC – Dr. Serene Jones, the first woman president in the 172-year history of Union Theological Seminary, will speak at UNCG Thursday, April 23.
Her lecture, “Women, Religion and Globalization,” begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Alumni House on College Avenue. Jones’ visit is sponsored by the UNCG Department of Religious Studies.
Jones became president of the faculty at Union Theological July 1, 2008, and is also Roosevelt Professor of Systematic Theology. She was previously Titus Street Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School.
Jones spent 17 years on the Yale University faculty, where she also served as chair and faculty member of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. She has held faculty appointments at Yale Law School and in the departments of African American Studies and Religious Studies.
In addition to publishing 37 articles and book chapters since 1991, she has delivered a long list of professional papers and public lectures across the United States and around the world. Her books include “Feminist Theory and Theology: Cartographies of Grace” and “Calvin and the Rhetoric of Piety.”
Jones earned her M.Div. from Yale Divinity School and her PhD. in theology from Yale University. She holds a B.A. from the University of Oklahoma, and is an ordained minister in both the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ.
Union Theological, located in New York City, was founded in 1836. Union is the oldest nondenominational seminary in the nation and one of only a handful that are independent of any denomination or university.
