Tickets to the 7:30 p.m. performance are $12 public, $8 seniors, $6 for children and students and $5 UNCG students. Tickets can be obtained by contacting the UNCG Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or online.

Huai is a very popular style of Chinese opera in the areas of Shanghai, Nanjing and the northern part of Jiangsu Province and can be traced back over 140 years. It originated in the northern Jiangsu villages and developed gradually from a form of story-telling and singing into an operatic art form.

In the 18th century, Huai opera from Anhui province was spread to the northern Jiangsu Yanfu region. The local artists performed with Anhui opera performers and had the chance to learn and absorb the essence of Anhui Huai opera in the aspects of programs, instrumental accompaniment, music and performing. The result led to the improvement of their performing form and gave birth to the very colorful Huai opera.

The 30-member Shanghai Huai Opera troupe will perform five scenes from some of most famous operas in the Huai tradition: “Stopping the Horse,” “Legend of White Snake – Broken Bridge,” “A Mute Girl at Trial – Going to the Capital,” “The Oil Merchant and Miss Hua Kueinu” and “Journey to the West – The Leopard.”
