GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dr. David H. Perrin, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNCG, will chair the search committee to find a replacement for Athletics Director Nelson E. Bobb, who has resigned the position effective June 30.
The committee was announced by Chancellor Linda P. Brady, who said it includes representatives of important university constituencies. The committee is charged with conducting a national search to find UNCG’s next athletics director. The committee will review the responsibilities of UNCG’s athletics director and develop a new position description for the job that Bobb has held since his arrival in 1983.
Brady told the committee that she wants to receive the names of three to four finalists and she hopes to announce an appointment before classes begin on Aug. 24. Brady said that characteristics to be sought in a candidate are a deep knowledge of intercollegiate athletics; leadership, administrative and fundraising abilities; a strong commitment to the academic success of student athletes; and passion.
“Finding the right person for this position is extremely important to our university,” Brady said. “Just as Nelson Bobb developed UNCG athletics into a modern program, the new athletics director will raise UNCG‘s program to a higher level of visibility and excellence, especially with our men’s basketball program moving to the Greensboro Coliseum this coming season.”
Perrin has been provost at UNCG since July 2007, and previously was dean of UNCG’s School of Health and Human Performance for six years. Other members of the search committee are:
• Dr. Terry Ackerman, chair of the Advisory Council on Intercollegiate Athletics, and chair of the Department of Educational Research Methodology.
• Dr. Robert Mayo, head of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and chair of the Faculty Senate intercollegiate athletics advisory committee.
• Dr. Shelly Brown-Jeffy, an assistant professor of sociology and a member of the Faculty Senate intercollegiate athletics advisory committee.
• Ed Kitchen, vice president of the Joseph M. Bryan Foundation of Greensboro and retired Greensboro city manager.
• Tom Martin ’69, former student-athlete (played on UNCG’s first men’s basketball team and a member of the UNCG Hall of Fame), past president of the UNCG Alumni Association, and past chair of the Spartan Club.
• Sue Cole ’72, MBA ’77, a principal with Granville Capital Inc. and a UNCG alumna.
• Jessica Russo, president of the UNCG Student Government Association, 2009-10.
