GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Division of Student Affairs has announced its top awards for student leadership and service.

The 2009 honors were presented at the annual Campus Activities and Programs Student Organizations Awards Program. The student winners are:

James H. Allen Student Leader Scholarship - David Klein of Matthews.
The award, in the amount of $1,000, goes to a rising senior who has distinguished himself or herself as a leader during the first three years at UNCG. The award is named for James H. Allen, who was vice chancellor for student affairs at UNCG from 1973-1996. The fund was created by Allen’s friends and family in recognition of his service to the institution.

Klein is a member of the Residence Hall Association, a member of the Lacrosse Club, Elliott University Center facility manager, scholarship committee chair, recruitment committee chair, pledge educator for his fraternity, president of Kappa Delta Rho and president of the Inter-Fraternity Council. He has raised funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Association and for a sorority scholarship competition. He is working on a scholarship to provide books for incoming male freshmen and serves off campus as a mentor for a fourth-grader at Hampton Elementary.

Pamela A. Wilson Memorial Scholarship - Cameron Hodge of Greensboro.
The award, in the amount of $750, honors the late Pam Wilson, who was director of Multicultural Affairs at UNCG until her untimely death in March 2002. The honor goes to a student who has mentored fellow students or members of the greater community, and who has demonstrated consistent interest and involvement in community-based service.

Hodge volunteers at Brighton Gardens Assisted Living, and works with Positive Direction for Youth and Family and UNCG Youth Taking Charge. Her past volunteer experience has included work for Centro De Accion Latino; Big Brothers, Big Sisters; the UNCG Office of Multicultural Affairs Peer Mentor program; and UNCG Alternative Spring Break. She is passionate about effecting positive change in areas around the world.

Georgia Cooper Moore Service Leadership Award - Kirsten Kinne of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Amanda Bregel of Greensboro.
The award, in the amount of $1,500, is named in memory of Georgia C. Moore, who attended the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNCG). The honor goes to a rising senior who is selected on the basis of solid academic performance and meritorious service to UNCG. The fund was created by her son, Beverly C. Moore.

Through the African Services Coalition of Greensboro, Kinne has aided multiple refugee families as they seek a new community in the United States. While studying abroad in Montpellier, France, she worked toward creating the first homeless shelter in Montpellier. She has served the UNCG campus community through Circle K and its homelessness awareness programs. Kinne has also been inducted into Golden Chain Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society.

Bregel is a Lloyd International Honors College student and a North Carolina Teaching Fellow. She is president of Circle K, and has participated this year in service projects with elementary schools, advocacy walks and tutoring. She also helped organize a week of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness initiatives on campus. She is a graduate of the national LeaderShape Institute, and has applied those lessons in leadership to multiple student-led UNCG disaster-relief trips to the Gulf Coast region.
