GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dr. Bob Wineburg, the Jefferson Pilot Excellence Professor in the Department of Social Work, has been honored with the Shofar Award from the Welfare Reform Liaison Project (WRLP).
The award recognizes individuals and organizations for their support of WRLP, a nonprofit faith-based workforce development agency. Usually made from a ram’s horn, a shofar is a trumpet that was used by the ancient Hebrews in battle and during religious ceremonies.
Wineburg has worked with the Rev. Odell Cleveland, president and CEO of WRLP, in many aspects of program planning and development since the organization’s inception more than 12 years ago. The media production training program emerged from Wineburg’s grant writing class seven years ago, when students researched and wrote the first grant for this successful part of WRLP’s workforce development operation.
A member of the UNCG faculty since 1980, Wineburg served as chairman of the Department of Social Work from 1990 to 1994 and has written extensively about social welfare policy and religiously based social services.
He is the author of the books “Faith-Based Inefficiencies: The Follies of Bush’s Initiatives” (2007) and “A Limited Partnership: The Politics of Religion, Welfare, and Social Service” (2000). He co-wrote “The Newer Deal: Social Work and Religion in Partnership” (1999).
