GREENSBORO, N.C. — Tonight's luminaire display is cancelled due to the threat of rain today and on Wednesday. The event is not being re-scheduled.
UNCG Semester end is always a special time at UNCG as musical and visual traditions in December finish out the year. You can mark two events on your calendar:
On Sunday, Dec. 6, an estimated 200 singers and musicians will present in the School of Music’s annual holiday choral concert at 5 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm Street in Greensboro. The free, public event includes nearly all of school’s student vocal groups and will feature both sacred and secular music of the season.
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the campus will glow by candlelight when the 40th annual luminaire display takes place on Reading Day. Up to 7,000 candle luminaires will light up the night from 5-10 p.m. The luminaires will be set out in the middle of campus in the Residence Hall Quadrangle, in the Student Plaza outside the Dining Hall and along Spring Garden and Aycock streets. Visitors are invited to view the luminaires and join the UNCG community in welcoming the holidays.
The holiday tradition began at UNCG in 1969 and is held on Reading Day, closing out the semester. When the candles burn out, students will turn to their textbooks before final exams, which begin at 8 a.m. the next day.
