GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dr. Sue Stinson, a professor of dance at UNCG, has received the 2009 N.C. Dance Alliance Annual Award for her efforts during the past 30 years to educate dancers and dance teachers.
Stinson joined the UNCG faculty in 1979 and served as head of the Department of Dance 1993-2002. She is the undergraduate coordinator for the department and the coordinator/advisor for the MA in Dance Education program.
She has taught dance to students from pre-school through senior adults and been named a master teacher by the Artist in Schools Program of the National Endowment for the Arts. She has presented practical workshops and scholarly work nationally and internationally and published her work in a number of journals as well as book chapters. Her book about teaching dance to young children is widely used and has been translated into Japanese.
Her contributions to the field include serving on committees to establish state and national standards for dance education. She is a leader in the effort to develop new K-12 Essential Standards in Dance for the N.C. Department of Public Instruction. Nationally, she is a founding member and former chair of Dance and the Child: International.
She is the third member of the current UNCG faculty to be honored with this award from the N.C. Dance Alliance. The alliance recognized Jan Van Dyke in 2001 and John Gamble in 2007.
