GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will mark one of the most pivotal events of the 20th century – the fall of the Berlin Wall – with a symposium exploring the long-lasting effects on Germany.
The event, “20 Years Fall of the Wall: Germany, Sustainable Democracy?,” will be held Friday, Nov. 6, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the UNCG Faculty Center on College Avenue. The event is free and open to the public at no charge.
The symposium will feature talks from a number of UNCG scholars, including Chancellor Linda P. Brady, on life before and after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The event will end with a reception and book launching party at 4:30 p.m.
The day’s scheduled lectures include:
• “After the Fall: Late Globalization and Paradigm Shift in Post-Cold War U.S. Culture,” by Dr. Christian Moraru (English)
• Panel discussion: “Humor, Satire and Identity: Post-Unification Eastern German Literature” by Dr. Jill Twark (East Carolina University, German), “Sharing Illusions of Achieving Common Ground? An Ecofeminist Reading of Christa Wolf’s Work” by Dr. Deborah Janson (West Virginia University, German) and “Germany: Immigration and Integration after the Wall” by Dr. Andreas Lixl (German)
• Panel discussion: “Arms Control in the Post-Cold World War” by Chancellor Linda P. Brady (Political Science) and “The Berlin Wall, the End of History and Its Return” by Dr. Karl Schleunes (History)
• Panel discussion: “The Final Collapse of the Second Ring of Soviet Empire: Gorbachev and theRecurrent ‘Problem’ of Communist Liberalization in Eastern Europe” by Dr. Jerry Pubantz (Political Science), “20 Years On, ‘Blooming Landscapes’ in Eastern Germany?” by Dr. Corey Johnson (Geography) and “German Educational Reform: Understanding Bologna” by Dr. Penelope Pynes (International Programs Center)
