GREENSBORO, N.C. — Dr. Penelope Pynes, an experienced educator with extensive knowledge of international higher education, has been appointed associate provost for international programs at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Pynes served an interim appointment in the position for the past year.
In her almost two decades of service at UNCG, Pynes has made an impact as an administrator and a teacher. She has been involved with the UNCG International Studies Program’s exchange program since its infancy, playing a key role in sending UNCG’s first two exchange students abroad in the early 1990s. She was also involved in the creation of the University of North Carolina Exchange Program, which facilitates study abroad opportunities for students throughout the UNC system.
From 2001 through 2008, she served as the director of UNCG’s Study Abroad and Exchange Programs, developing, maintaining and organizing exchange programs with more than 50 international partners. During her tenure in the position, the number of students participating in study abroad and exchange doubled.
Pynes, who has a doctoral degree in Germanic linguistics from UNC-Chapel Hill, has taught all levels of German at UNCG and was awarded the inaugural UNCG College of Arts and Sciences Teaching Excellence Award in 1995.
