GREENSBORO, N.C. — Camila Alire, president of the American Library Association, will deliver the keynote address at UNCG’s Information, Diversity, Engagement, Access and Libraries Summit (iDEALS) on Monday, Nov. 9.
The summit, organized by the Department of Library and Information Studies, will bring together students, faculty, alumni, the regional professional community and other stakeholders 1-8 p.m. in Alexander Room of Elliott University Center.
Alire will speak at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a showcase and reception at 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and the audience may attend all or parts of iDEALS.
“Our department connects people, libraries and information,” said Dr. Clara M. Chu, the new head of library and information studies. “One of the ways we do that is through relationships with the public and professionals in our field. This summit is about making new connections and strengthening the ones we already have.”
The department is taking a community approach to discussing and identifying strategies to address information, diversity, engagement, access and libraries (iDEAL) in its education, research, practice and community building. The department’s focus on iDEAL is aligned with UNCG’s new strategic plan, and represents Chu’s expertise.
Alire is dean emerita at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University and will speak on her presidential initiative – “Libraries, the Heart of All Communities” – as it applies to the theme of the summit, iDEAL.
She holds adjunct professor positions at Simmons College’s PhD program in managerial leadership in the information professions and San Jose University’s executive MLIS program. Her background includes service as a community college library director, head of a special library, school librarian (K-12) and assistant to the dean/instructor at a library school.
She has a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Northern Colorado and an MLS from the University of Denver.
Please RSVP by Tuesday, Nov. 3, to Cindy Felts at cpfelts@uncg.edu or (336) 334-3477. The first 60 registrants will receive complimentary parking.
