GlaxoSmithKline Executive to Address Business Summit Nov. 16

GREENSBORO, N.C. Bob Ingram, vice chairman for pharmaceuticals of GlaxoSmithKline, will be the keynote speaker Monday, Nov. 16, at the fourth annual UNCG Business Summit, presented by Wachovia.

As CEO/chairman of GlaxoWellcome, Ingram co-led the 2000 merger that formed GlaxoSmithKline, the world’s second largest pharmaceutical company.

The event will be held 8 a.m.-noon in Cone Ballroom of Elliott University Center. Free parking will be provided in UNCG’s Oakland Avenue parking deck behind Yum-Yum’s restaurant.

Other speakers include Dr. David Perrin, UNCG provost; Douglas W. Copeland, publisher of The Business Journal of the Triad; Dr. Patricia W. Stewart, UNCG vice chancellor for university advancement; and Leslie Hayes, regional president of Wachovia.

Wachovia is the presenting sponsor of the Business Summit, an event designed to bring together the Triad’s business and higher education leaders. Additional support for the summit has been provided by AT&T, BB&T, The Business Journal, The Cemala Foundation, CommunityOne Bank, Duke Energy, FedEx, The Greensboro Partnership, MidCarolina Bank, News & Record, and Senn Dunn.

Ingram serves as chairman of OSI Pharmaceuticals and lead director of VALEANT Pharmaceuticals International. He also serves on the board of directors of Allergan, Cree, Edwards Lifesciences Corporation and Lowe’s Companies. He is a general partner of Hatteras Venture Partners, a venture capital firm that invests in early stage life science companies.

In addition to his professional responsibilities, he was asked by former President George H.W. Bush to form and chair the CEO Roundtable on Cancer. In 2004, he was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award for International Service. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to the National Cancer Advisory Board of the National Institutes of Health in 2006.

Chairman of the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Ingram is a board member for the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy, Project HOPE, Research Triangle Foundation of North Carolina, H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, and the CEO Roundtable on Cancer, and Chairman. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

The summit will feature a business solutions forum, UNCG Partnering with the Community, moderated by Copeland. The forum will examine four topics: Impact Greensboro, Logistics and Competitiveness, MBA Consulting Projects, and Health Centers for the Elderly. A question-and-answer period will be held after each group’s presentation.


The event will also include a drawing for two tickets to the UNCG-Wake Forest men’s basketball game at 7 p.m. Dec. 28 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
