Subject:  Enhancing UNCG’s Commitment to Student Successs

(Posted 9-30-09)

I am sending this communication to let you know that, effective January 1, 2010, responsibility for UNCG’s academic programs, research activities, and student affairs will be consolidated under the leadership of the Provost, who will carry the title “Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor.”

Under this new administrative model, the provost’s direct reports will include the Vice Provost, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and the Academic Deans, among others. The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development will remain members of the Chancellor’s Executive Staff, which meets weekly.

I have asked the Provost to consult with members of the Deans’ Council and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and her senior staff on the appointment of a transition team, including representatives from both divisions, to identify and address issues associated with this administrative restructuring.

Faculty and staff in academic affairs and student affairs are equally committed to the success of UNCG’s students. This administrative structure will provide a creative environment leading to the development of common goals and new approaches to enhancing student success. UNCG continues to put “Students First.”

This action is not being taken in response to budget cuts that have been implemented in 2009-10. However, efficiencies and cost-savings may occur in future years as a result of the integration of staff and review of programs. There will be no net increase in senior administrative positions as a result of this restructuring.

UNCG’s Strategic Plan 2009-14 emphasizes our commitment to access and student success. This new administrative structure reinforces UNCG’s commitment to being a student-centered university, and it will foster collaboration between faculty and staff, across academic and student affairs, to enhance the recruitment, retention, and success of students, coordination of leadership and service-learning programs and internships, and engaged scholarship, research, and creative activity.

This restructuring also will support our goal of enhancing the residential character of the university, as expressed in UNCG’s Strategic Housing Plan, and will contribute to the expansion of living-learning communities and the residential college experience – outcomes that will require active collaboration and closer coordination between academic and student affairs units.

Many comprehensive research universities across the United States (including the University of Washington, Stanford University, Clemson University, and Virginia Tech) have adopted this model as the preferred approach on their campuses. UNCG’s commitment to student success will be reinforced through this new administrative structure, which will bring together faculty and student affairs professionals in support of our common purpose.
