GREENSBORO, N.C. Today’s classical music – the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and more – was composed hundreds of years ago.

The classics of tomorrow are being composed today.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s School of Music will showcase new works during the sixth annual New Music Festival Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 1. The festival is designed to showcase the work of contemporary composers, said event co-director Dr. Mark Engebretson.

“New creation is really a fundamental element in order for art to thrive,” said Engebretson, an associate professor of composition in the School of Music. “Historical music is important to our tradition, but what Beethoven did in his day was to invent new music. The composers in our festival are engaged in that same process.”

The festival includes three concerts, all of which start at 7:30 p.m. The concerts on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 29-30, will be in the School of Music Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 general admission, $6 for seniors, $4 for students and $3 for UNCG students, and can be purchased from the University Box Office at (336) 334-4849 or online at boxoffice.uncg.edu. The Oct. 1 concert will be held in the Atrium of the Weatherspoon Art Museum and is open to the public at no charge.

The festival also includes a number of free seminars and lectures, including one by Pulitzer Prize- winning composer Paul Moravec at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the School of Music, Room 233.
