UNCG Marks Black History Month with Slate of Events

GREENSBORO, N.C. More than a month of activities is scheduled at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro to commemorate the legacy, history and heritage of African Americans during Black History Month.


All events are open to the public at no charge unless noted.


Feb. 1, Woolworth Sit-ins 50th anniversary march from campus to the Phil G. McDonald Governmental Plaza in downtown Greensboro. Participants will gather at 11:30 a.m. in front of Guilford Residence Hall on campus; the walk will begin at noon. A bus will be available for those wishing to participate who may not be able to walk the entire distance. Feb. 2, Discussion forum: “Conservative Blacks and Black Conservatives: There are Differences." 4 p.m. Joyner Room of Elliott University Center (EUC). Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. For more information, visit maf.dept.uncg.edu.


Feb. 2, Discussion forum: “The Sigma Barbershop: An Open Discussion Session.” 5:30-7:30 p.m. Multicultural Resource Center, EUC. Refreshments provided. Sponsored by UNCG’s Rho Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.


Feb. 4, Lecture: “The Civil War in Modern Eyes” by Dr. Thomas J. Brown, University of South Carolina. 7 p.m. Virginia Dare Room, Alumni House. Sponsored by University Libraries.


Feb. 6, Performance: The 10th Annual NC Challenge Stepshow. 7 p.m. Aycock Auditorium. Advance tickets: $7/UNCG students, $10/non-UNCG students. Day-of-event tickets: $10/UNCG students, $15/non-UNCG students. Tickets can be purchased at the UNCG Box Office in EUC or by calling (336) 334-4849. Feb. 10, Lecture: "Female Rappers and Their Gods" by Dr. Ebony Utley, assistant professor of communication studies at California State University, Long Beach. 3 p.m. Ferguson Building Auditorium. Sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Feb. 11, Lecture on the Woolworth Sit-Ins by Dr. Linda Beatrice Brown, a professor of English at Bennett College who participated in the event. 5 p.m. Ashby Parlor of Mary Foust Residence Hall. Sponsored by the Ashby Residential College.

Feb. 18, Lecture: "Did Abe Lincoln Really Free the Slaves?" by Dr. Paul Finkelman, Albany School of Law. 7 p.m. Virginia Dare Room, Alumni House. Sponsored by University Libraries.


Feb. 26, Event: Sleepout for the Homeless. 8 p.m. until morning. UNCG Fountain. Sponsored by UNCG’s Rho Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Chapter members will sleep outside to raise awareness about homelessness and collect clothing donations for the Greensboro Urban Ministry.


March 4, Lecture: “‘Help Me to Find My People’: Searching for Family After Slavery Ended” by Dr. Heather Williams, UNC Chapel Hill. 7 p.m. Virginia Dare Room, Alumni House. Sponsored by University Libraries.


Extended exhibits:

Through March 5: “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation,” a national touring exhibit that explores Lincoln's gradual transformation from an anti-slavery moderate to “The Great Emancipator.” Located in the Jackson Library Reading Room during regular library hours.


Through March 15: “The Integration of Woman’s College.” Located on the first floor of Jackson Library during regular library hours.


Through March 15: “The Sit-Ins: Woman’s College Perspective.” Located in the EUC Connector during regular building hours.
