David Orr speaks on sustainability April 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. Environmentalist, author and educator David Orr will deliver a public lecture, “Black Swans and the Challenge of Resilience,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in 100 Ferguson Building. A reception and book signing will follow in the lobby of the Gatewood Building.

Oberlin College’s Paul Sears Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics, Orr has written six books, most recently “Down to the Wire: Confronting Climate Collapse” (2009), and co-edited three more. He has lectured at hundreds of colleges throughout the U.S. and Europe and has received the Millennium Leadership Award from Global Green, the Bioneers Award, the National Wildlife Federation Leadership Award and a Lyndhurst Prize acknowledging “persons of exceptional moral character, vision, and energy.”

Earlier the same day, Orr will lead two workshops for faculty about integrating sustainability into the classroom: “Working on Sustainability” at 3 p.m. and “Starting to Work on Sustainability” at 4 p.m. For more information, contact Anna Marshall-Baker, head of the Department of Interior Architecture, at anna_marshallbaker@uncg.edu.

Orr’s visit has been organized by faculty in the School of Human Environmental Sciences, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Bryan School.
