UNCG Talks! Behind the Scenes

With more than 300 diverse performances a year, the School of Music, Theatre and Dance offers one of the most dynamic arts experiences in North Carolina. But it is the work taking place behind the scenes that sets the school apart from virtually any other program in the country. For example, the school's Music Research Institute (MRI) is collaborating with the Joint School of Nanotechnology to pioneer devices and approaches that protect musicians and audiences from music induced hearing loss while still allowing full enjoyment of performances. MRI director Dr. Donald Hodges and other faculty and students from the School of Music, Theatre and Dance will be glad to come speak – and perform – at your next meeting to share a behind the scenes look on this and other engaging topics.

UNCG Talks! Nano 101: Understanding Nanoscience and Nanoengineering Research

The Triad has become a nano frontier of sorts. With the opening of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN), our region is now home to one of the only nanotechnology degree programs in the nation, according to the National Nanotechnology Initiative. In addition to being one of a few schools offering this type of study, it's the only one created and operated collaboratively by two universities, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University.

The science and engineering of the small is a big deal with potentially huge implications. But understanding nanotechnology and its importance can be a challenge. James G. Ryan, Ph.D., Founding Dean of JSNN, will answer your questions as he explains what nanotechnology is and how it is enabling novel applications and profoundly improving a vast array of technologies from paint to electronics developed over the last few years. This presentation will provide an overview of "nano" research activities with special emphasis on nanobiology and nanomaterials problems including drug development and delivery, nanobioelectronic technology, nanoenvironmental technology, biomaterials analysis and nanofabrication techniques. The presentation will also discuss the infrastructure and capabilities of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering.
