Sally and Alan Cone Women's and Gender Studies Undergraduate Major Scholarship

Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduates; declared Women's and Gender Studies major; completion of WGS/WGS 250; GPA of at least 3.0

Each year, one $1,500 scholarship is available to an undergraduate Women’s and Gender Studies major. Selection will be made on the basis of need, academic standing, and commitment to Women’s and Gender Studies. The applicant must be a currently enrolled undergraduate declared as a Women’s and Gender Studies major, have completed WGS 250, and have a GPA of at least 3.0. The application should include an essay of no more than 500 words that states, clearly and compellingly, the applicant’s goals as a Women’s and Gender Studies major and the place of women’s and gender studies in the applicant’s development. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from a UNCG teaching faculty member and are due April 1 for the following fall.

Sally and Alan Cone Women's and Gender Studies Graduate Major Scholarship

Eligibility: Rising 2nd-year M.A. student in WGS; completion of WGS 650; GPA of at least 3.0

Each year, one $1500 scholarship is available to a rising second-year M.A. student in Women’s and Gender Studies. Selection will be made on the basis of academic standing and the clarity of the link between the student’s academic program and career goals. The applicant must be a currently enrolled M.A. student, and must have a GPA of at least 3.0. The application should include a copy of the student’s graduate transcript and a letter of no more than 1200 words that clearly explains the links between the student’s chosen track in the Master’s program (Gender and Health, Gender and Community Leadership, or Individualized Concentration) and her or his career goals. Applications should be accompanied by two letters of recommendation from faculty members, at least one of which must be from a WGS faculty member. Applications are due April 1 for the following fall.

Sally and Alan Cone Course Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate or Graduate status; interest in Women's and Gender Studies

Each semester, up to three $450 scholarships will be available for undergraduate or graduate students seeking to enroll in a Women’s and Gender Studies course. The applicant must be currently enrolled or have been admitted as an undergraduate or graduate student. Selection will be made on the basis of financial need, life and work experience, community service and/or leadership. The application must include an essay of no more than 500 words that addresses the selection criteria above and states, clearly and compellingly, the applicant’s interest in women’s and gender studies and how the course supports her/his goals. Applications are due by March 16 for the fall semester and December 1 for the spring semester.

Sally and Alan Cone Award to Students for Outstanding Work in Women's and Gender Studies

Eligibility: Undergraduate or Graduate status

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program will present a cash award annually of at least $200 to at least one undergraduate and one graduate student whose projects are judged to make the most significant contribution to the field of women’s and gender studies. Any creative and/or intellectual contribution that meaningfully addresses women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies is eligible, including, but not limited to, an academic paper of any length, creative project, performance, program or work of art.

Project descriptions and supporting documents (papers, slides, recordings, programs, etc) must be submitted by March 1 for works completed during the previous spring or fall semester. Submissions must be accompanied by a letter of support from a UNCG faculty member; this letter should indicate whether the work was done to meet the requirements of a particular class at UNCG. If the project is co-authored, each author’s role should be clearly explained in any supporting letters and documents. The student’s address, phone number, and email address should be included.

Committee members will evaluate each project based upon their relevance to women’s and gender studies and the quality, coherence, and significance of the project.

Sally and Alan Cone Student Grant for Special Projects in Women's and Gender Studies

Each year, grants of up to $500 will be awarded to UNCG students to support projects in women’s and gender studies that may require a limited amount of special funding. Possible uses for the grants include, but are not limited to, travel for research or artistic purposes, conference attendance, research/creative project support in the form of supplies, photocopying, payment for laboratory participants or other expenses, or support of a community service project or internship. Preference will be given to those students who have not received the award previously. Students may not receive more than one special projects grant per year. Applications may not be made for reimbursement of expenditures from the past unless the applicant is in a process where expenses related to the project need to be prepaid. Requests for travel must be made prior to the trip.

Applications by Undergraduate Students must include:

  • the completed application form
  • a budget delineating the planned use of the requested funds
  • an essay or letter of one-to-two pages in length explaining the significance of the project for women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies; send any appropriate research paper(s) written that may help explain the project, if applicable
  • a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor for the project
  • if the application is to fund a conference presentation, submit the paper accepted for presentation and appropriate conference information; if the application is to fund conference attendance, specify in a short narrative how attendance supports the project you are working on

Applications by Graduate Students must include:

  • the completed application form
  • a budget delineating the planned use of the requested funds
  • an essay or letter explaining the significance of the project for women’s studies, feminism, or gender studies; send any appropriate research paper(s) written that may help explain the project, if applicable, including an explanation of methodology or project development process. Include a brief bibliography or list of performances/exhibits where relevant.
  • a letter of recommendation from the faculty advisor for the project
  • if the application is to fund conference attendance, specify in a short narrative how attendance supports the project you are working on. Graduate students may receive up to two conference travel awards during the course of her or his program at UNCG. Those students who are accepted to present at a conference must apply for funding from the Graduate Conference Presentation Fund rather than this grant fund.

Materials should be submitted to the Women's and Gender Studies Office, 200 Foust, between August 15 and April 15 for a decision within a month.

Sally and Alan Cone Graduate Student Travel Award for Conference Presentations

Eligibility: M.A. student in WGS; simultaneous application for GSA travel funds; acceptance for presentation at a conference

Each year up to three awards of up to $350 each will be available to off-set travel costs for M.A. students who are presenting papers or creative work at an academic conference. Students may not receive more than one award per year, and they may not receive more than two awards during their tenure in the graduate program. Only students who have already been accepted for a conference should apply, but they should apply before traveling. (If a graduate student is attending a conference, but not presenting, he or she should apply to the Special Projects Grant if seeking to secure travel support.) Applications should include an abstract of the presentation, up to one-page in length, that clearly explains the argument of the paper or nature of the creative work and its relevance to the critical conversations in the field of WGS. Applicants should also include a brief description of the conference (copies of the conference call for papers and/or the website homepage describing the conference are acceptable) and a budget clearly outlining how funds will be spent and the total amount requested. Finally, please also attach a copy of the completed GSA travel fund application with this Cone application. It is not necessary to have secured GSA funds, but it is necessary to seek GSA support in addition to Cone funds.

Linda Arnold Carlisle Faculty Research Grant

Eligibility: Full-time, tenure-track faculty; cannot have received the grant within the past three years

Linda Arnold Carlisle Faculty Research Grants are awarded to UNCG faculty to support research or creative activity related to women's and gender studies. All full-time faculty who have not received the Carlisle Grant within the past three years are eligible to apply. Grants will be awarded based on the quality and completeness of the proposal, significance of the project, its implication for women's and gender studies, and the significance of the project to the applicant's career and future plans

Carlisle Faculty grants provide a stipend of $1000 to support tenure-track faculty research expenses for a project relating to Women's and Gender Studies. Grant applications are due March 22. Applicants will be notified about the grant by April 15.

Linda Arnold Carlisle Professorship

Eligibility: A full professor who has contributed to the Women's and Gender Studies Program. Candidates in all disciplines and departments are invited to apply.

The Linda Arnold Carlisle Distinguised Excellence Professorship was established by the UNCG Friends of Women's and Gender Studies for the purpose of enhancing the academic and co-curricular programs of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at UNCG. Specifically, it will simultaneously reward the most promising faculty research agendas while using that selected research focus to build energy throughout the WGS Program and the campus community. The Professorship will be awarded for a period of four academic years. The same person may hold the appointment more than once but must apply in each case through the normal process Contact the WGS Office for more information.

UNESCO Laura W. Bush Fellowship

The fellowship is intended for American college/university students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. The length of time for the travel is expected to be between 4 and 6 weeks and should include interaction with individuals from other nations. During his/her travel, the recipient should be willing to participate in public diplomacy events arranged with the pertinent U.S. State Department Consulate, Mission, and/or Embassy. Following the travel, the recipient agrees to submit a report describing experiences and analyzing objectives achieved; share his/her experiences with others; and be available to make a presentation at the Annual Meeting of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO.

Eligibility:

Must be a U.S. Citizen eligible for foreign travel
Must be at least 18 years old and not older than 25 at the time of application
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university in the United States
