The Vagina Monologues

In Spring 2006, UNCG joined thousand of colleges and universities across the country in presenting "The Vagina Monologues". Based on interviews with over 200 women about their memories and experiences of sexuality, The Vagina Monologues gives voice to women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who reads it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again. It is witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise. "At first women were reluctant to talk," Ensler writes. "They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them." With 3 performances and larges audiences, this production raised over $1700 that benefited The Clara House, a local shelter for abused women.

In 2007, the three UNCG performances attracted even larger crowds and raised over $2300 for The Clara House. Ourannual production February 14, 15, and 16, 2008 set a new recore, raising over $2700 for the Clara House.

Reflections on the Performance: "I Was There"

Creative Action: Gender and the Arts Conference and Youth InitiativeThe Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro funded an Intiative for girls that allowed middle and high school girls from diverse backgrounds to attend the Creative Action Conference. This conference examined how the arts can be used for social and political action. This included examining how expressive mediums of all types--dance, theatre, music, film, literature, visual arts, animation, puppetry, and other forms—are used to raise social consciousness and rethink identity norms such as of gender, class, and sexuality, in political protest, or to incite violence and encourage intolerance.

"Making History Real: Southern Writing, Gender and Race", A Seminar for Teachers October 1-2, 2004. This program is made possible by a grant from the North Carolina Humanities Council, a state-based program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Girls' Zine: Sponsored by the North Carolina Humanities Council, this historic project brought together middle and high school girls throughout Guilford County to create the first ever local online magazine by and for teenage girls.

Transitions for Girls: Transitions was an annual one-day interactive workshop for 9th grade girls and the adults in their lives. Its aim was to prepare the students and parents for the upcoming opportunities and challenges that face high school girls today. It featured speakers and presenters from community agencies, local universities, and Grimsley High School who led separate sessions for the girls and parents. Women's and Gender Studies continues to provide transitions resources to the community.

Girls' Real Lives Conference: The GRL Conference of January 2002 was a smashing success.
