Activity 1:
 Who works in our community?

(Worth up to 15 points)


Grade Level: First

Approx. Time:  This activity will take 5-10 minutes for research, 15-20 minutes for preparation, and about 5 minutes per group for presentation.

Integrating Subject Areas:  Students will integrate research, computer (exploring a topic page), and creative thinking skills.

Rationale for this Activity
:  This activity is helpful for introducing different jobs in the community through the presentations of peers.

    Social Studies 5.1 - Identify and elaborate on community services.
    Technology 1.4 - Identify the Internet as a source of information.

Activity Sequence
:

1) You will want to divide the students into ten different groups and assign each group one occupation to explore.  Each group should go to that link and research the occupation.

2)  Have each group to organize a presentation telling about the occupation they explored, including what they do, who they help in the community, and any other important and relevant information.

3)  Each group will present their information in an interesting way to the rest of the class, and that gets the whole class involved.

Assessment:  After each group has presented, have the students to get a sheet of paper and write down two of the people they learned about and one important thing about them.

Activity 2:
My Favorite Community Worker

(Worth up to 10 points)
        Grade Level: First
       
        Approx. Time:  This activity should take 20-25 minutes to explore the website and 10-15 minutes to write a letter.

        Integrating Subject Area: This activity will integrate research and writing skills.

        Rationale for this Activity:  This activity is helpful because the children get to explore all ten links in the topic page and will write a personal letter.

       
NC SCOS:

            Social Studies 5.1 - Identify and elaborate on community services.

            English Language Arts 4.06 - Compose a variety of products (e.g. letters, etc.)

            Technology 1.4 - Identify the Internet as a source of information.

            Activity Sequence:

            1)  The students will explore the ten different occupations that are linked in the topic page through a teacher directed exploration.

             2)  After exploring each occupation, each child will write a letter to their favorite person thanking them for the way they help the community.


                Assessment
:  The letter includes at least one thing that the person does to help our community and uses the correct form for writing a letter.
