COURSE DESCRIPTION
Japanese 203 is a second year continuation course to communicative Japanese and its writing system. Students study more advanced concepts and acquire basic kanji characters. The course is designed to develop students’ four language skills and especially stresses on oral and written mastery of functional Japanese. The course also stresses on understanding of modern Japanese culture.
STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students successfully completing this course will be able to write communicative Japanese with combination of hiragana, katakana, and kanji, read simple literary text including folklore, newspaper comics, and carry basic conversation with native speakers.
COURSE OUTLINE
The course will cover 4 chapters of the textbook and additional course materials will be provided. Three exams including final will be given. See the course schedule for the dates.

ATTENDANCE/QUIZ/HOMEWORK/EXAM
Students are responsible for attending all class sessions and reviewing all materials presented in class including announcements about course procedures.
Students cannot miss a class without a valid reason. Missing 2 or more classes will result in one full grade penalty and /or dismissal from the course. Three late walk-ins will be counted as missing one session. Since the class meets only once a week, please make all the necessary arrangements to attend. If you still need to miss class, let me know by e-mailing me or leave me a message at 334-5427.
Please know that uou are responsible for contacting your classmate to get the information you miss.
Quizzes and
homework often include questions on materials presented only in class. There will be no make-up quizzes. If you miss any quiz due to illness or
other emergency reason, I will take the average points of your quizzes
throughout the semester to make up the one you miss. However, this happens only you provide me with valid
documentation such as doctor’s notes, notes from your supervisor, etc..
Late assignment will not be accepted without a valid reason.
If you miss the exam and wish for make-up exam, contact me within 24 hours. No make-up exams will be given without a valid reason.
