Education
B.A. English literature Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo 1985
M.A. English and Afro-American literature North Carolina A & T State University 1995

I was born in Shizuoka in Japan. I began studying English when I
was in junior high school. Throughout high school, English
was always my favorite subject. At Meiji Gakuin University, I majored in
English literature and also sought teaching license in English. During
the first part of my college years, I spent a lot of time reading
Shakespeare. Later on my interest moved into American literature. I was
especially interested in Soul Bellow, John Irving, Richard Wright, and
Ralph Ellison. At North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, I
majored in English and Afro-American literature. I kept reading Wright
and Ellison and added Toni Morrison, Zora Near Hurston and Chester Himes
to my reading list. Out of these African-American writers, I chose
Chester Himes for further study. I rethought and discovered my own
culture through studying new culture in the United States.
