Funded Research

An Institutional grant from the School of Criticism and Theory, a grant for the Advancement of Curriculum & Teaching, UNCG, and a grant from the College of Arts and Sciences, UNCG, allowed me to participate in the 1988 Summer School of Criticism and Theory at Dartmouth College. I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Edward Said whose views on Orientalism and Post-Colonial Theory I applied to my study of the prose production of Spanish contemporary writer, Juan Goytisolo.

An International Kohler Fund Award in 1999 helped me to defray the expenses of my trip to Madrid, Spain for research at the National Library and to Salamanca, the site of the National Historical Archives for the Spanish Civil War. My visit was very valuable and helped me to focus more precisely on the scope of my on-going research project about the Spanish Civil War romancero [Ballads] and about visual manifestations from the war period (poster collections, postcards, calendars, and several other graphic sources available in the Archives).
